Complementary courses in International Law. For admission to the course the student is required to have submitted and defended a full candidate thesis as well as oppose a candidate thesis

The course consists of an internship at an agency, organization or company in Sweden or abroad. The student is responsible for obtaining an internship. The internship must be approved by the institution in advance, prior to any agreement being entered into between the student, internship and academic institution. The place of internship will provide support to the student through tutoring and supervision. The student will participate in the daily working life at the place of internship and offer information about the role of international law in crisis and conflict.

• Describe and analyse the role of the relevant agency, organization or company in the international framework, their responsibilities and duties, and the demands placed on workers in the sector in which the organization operates.
• Analyse the relationship between practice and theory.
• Apply international law to complex practical issues, and critique the operation of international law from a policy perspective.
• Structure and sustain concise and cohesive written arguments for a legal audience.
• Analyse the impact of international law from policy perspectives and in the context of social and cultural diversity.
• Reflect on the student’s abilities to effectively undertake legal work in a practical setting.
• Report in writing on the student’s own experiences in the internship and demonstrate a synthesis of practical work experience and theoretical learning from the previous courses.

Grading
Grades are set in a two-grade grade scale: Passed (G) or Fail (U).

Restrictions in number of examinations
No limitation on the number of examinations.

When the course is no longer offered, or if its contents change significantly, students are entitled, once per semester for three further semesters, to be examined according to this syllabus.

The course cannot be part of a degree whose content is wholly or partly in accordance with the content of this course

The Defence University encourages students to have contacts with external organizations and actors, both in Sweden and abroad. Practicing an internship or writing a dissertation in another country is a good experience for the student's knowledge development, in combination with the tools offered by the Defence University. For university students who travel abroad in the context of the Minor Field studies (MFS) grants and for students who practice internships in organizations, there should always be a supervisor who acts as a contact person and supports the student's work.

The Defence University reserves the right not to approve proposed internships if the organization or contact person is deemed inappropriate. The internship's activities must not be contrary to the value base for state employees in Sweden. Because it is up to the Defence University to make the aptitude assessment, a proposed internship can be denied, on the basis that it takes too much resources to assess appropriateness.

The course is offered as an elective course.

On completion of the course, an evaluation will be conducted under the auspices of the course director and will serve as the basis for any changes to the course.

If a student has a decision from the Swedish Defence University regarding special educational support due to a disability, the examiner may decide on alternative forms of examination for the student.
