Military group cohesion in Ukraine

This PhD project explores the dynamics of military group cohesion in the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the contemporary war against the russian invasion.

Through ethnography and in-depth interviews with serving warfighters, the project studies how cohesion is instantiated despite a setting where soldiers have little or no professional or social cohesion to draw from before deploying to battle.

The project contributes to the broader field of War Studies by focalizing the warfighter in on-going high-intensity kinetic warfare of dimensions unknown to Europe since 1945. And, in doing so, showcases a way to do risk-conscious fieldwork in volatile environments.
