Dr. Adriana Avila-Zúñiga Nordfjeld is an Associate Senior Lecturer in Defence Systems at the Swedish Defence University. She is a lawyer and Attorney at Law, holding a Ph.D degree in Maritime Affairs with specialization in Maritime Administration: Maritime safety and security & risk management, from the World Maritime University, established under the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), from United Nations (UN). She also did post-doctoral research at the Moulin University Lyon 3 (France) as a member of the MERCRO Project -The sea at the crossroad: the legal repercussions of the superposition of legal regimes on the effectivity of the police at sea. In addition, she holds a Licentiate Degree (Eng. Scs) in Shipping from the Univer University of Mexico. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Maritime Management with specialization in Shipping and Marine Technology and risk management, from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden). As well as a Master of Laws degree in Maritime Law from the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Oslo (Norway). She is a member of the Board of experts of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies and part of the alumni from the Stockton Center of International Law, Center of Naval Warfare Studies, from the US Naval War College, where she conducted research within maritime operational law and maritime security in 2024. The Stockton Center for International Law (SCIL) is an internationally recognized research institute for the study of international law and military operations that produces original analysis for national decision-makers, senior military leaders, scholars, and legal practitioners throughout the world in order to better grasp the role of international law in naval, Joint and Combined operations. The Stockton Center for International Law is a department in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies that produces original research and analysis of both international law and military operations to educate and inform military leaders, national decision makers, and international law practitioners and scholars. The results of this analysis shapes legal interpretations affecting U.S. and partner nation forces throughout the world. Dr. Nordfjeld is also member of the Scientific Board of the International Journal American Yearbook of International Law (AYIL), published by the Center of European and International Justice.
Ms. Nordfjeld has more than 20 years working experience in the maritime industry/domain, producing high quality research in the maritime realm. Between 2008-2015 she was working at Statistics Norway, being responsible for the development and analysis of price and cost indices for international and domestic maritime transport. Prior to that, she held several managerial positions related to maritime logistics. Her expertise revolves around risk management, maritime safety and maritime security. During data collection for the doctoral research, she witnessed several situations at different institutions from the maritime sector where women were mistreated and working under verbal and physical violence. These sad experiences made her work harder towards the establishment of the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association, Chapter Mexico (WISTA MEXICO), which has as the main objective, the empowerment of women in the maritime, port and naval sectors. Adriana Avila Zúñiga Nordfjeld is the founding President of WISTA Mexico, which was officially launched on November 4, 2019.
