Rules of recording

The SEDU has specific rules applicable to audio and visual recordings. These rules have been developed in consultation with the student unions and were decided in September 2024.

If a request for recording from participants in a training session is received at least three days before the teaching session, it should be handled as follows:

Recording through audio and/or video

The following applies to recording during lectures

  • Audio and/or video recording may only be made if all present at the teaching session consent.
  • If the teacher objects, then recording cannot be permitted.
  • If the teacher consents to recording, they must ask the other participants (reasonably via email) if anyone objects. If anyone objects, recording cannot be permitted. If no one objects, recording is permitted.
  • If recording is permitted, this must be announced at the start of the teaching so that everyone is aware that it will take place. Recordings in such cases are only for private use with a prohibition against all distribution.

The following applies to recording during seminars

Recording of seminars is not permitted and consent cannot be given. Therefore, seminars may not be recorded at all by participants at the teaching session.

Special rules about still images:

Participants may photograph shared educational materials (such as PowerPoint slides, graphs, models, and other illustrations or texts related to the teaching presented by the teacher) for personal use with a prohibition against all distribution if:

  • The still image does contain a picture of another identifiable person, such as teachers and other students
  • The still image does contain sensitive information or personal data

Special rules for students with disabilities

  • Students with disabilities who have been issued a certificate and specifically granted recording as special educational support by the SEDU are exempt from the above rules.
  • Students who have been granted recording as special educational support may record teaching parts during both lectures and seminars for personal use with a prohibition against all distribution.
  • The support may specify whether it involves audio and/or video recording. A student who has been issued such a certificate must take responsibility for informing the course about their needs and displaying the certificate.
  • Teaching staff is responsible for notifying participants that recording will occur due to special educational support for certain students.
  • Care must be taken not to accidentally name which students have the need.
